About the Layan Residents Group

Founded in 2023 by a group of local residents, the Layan Residents Group (LRG) emerged in response to the rapid scale and pace of building developments in the Layan area
Recognizing this as part of a larger trend affecting Phuket - particularly in the Bang Tao beach areas - the group became concerned about the lack of any overall plan or control over size, height, number and quality of projects
While developments that bolster the local economy and infrastructure are welcome, most felt these new projects were exceeding sustainable limits, and so risking negative impacts on the environment and community

Our Collective Effort
To address these concerns, various local estates independently engaged licensed professional EIA consultants from the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy (ONEP). The decision was made to unify these efforts by collectively working with EIA consultants and other professionals, ensuring a coordinated and impactful approach

Our Ethos
The Group is founded on the principle of monitoring and overseeing developments whilst sharing information transparently. Our efforts focus on two key objectives;

  • Influencing Large-Scale Projects. Constructively addressing issues of legality, height, privacy, and environmental impact through coordinated reports, letters and meetings
  • Lobbying for Improved Infrastructure. Advocating for essential upgrades such as safe footpaths, effective storm drainage, reliable water supply, stable electrical networks, and better roads to benefit both residents and visitors

Looking Ahead
Presenting cohesive, evidence-based concerns will take patience and diligence. Fortunately, the Group is supported by a team of experienced professionals, including EIA consultants, civil engineers, and lawyers well-versed in Thailand's environmental and building laws.

The Group remains committed to engaging with the Office of Natural Resources and the Environment and relevant authorities, both in Phuket and Bangkok, to advocate for sustainable development and preserve the integrity of the Layan area
